The guard is not simply a piece of metal at the back of the trailer. The commonly cited $750,000 figure applies to certain for hire interstate carriers hauling nonhazardous property in trucks rated at 10,001 pounds or more. Hazardous material requirements can be $1 million or $5 million, depending on the material and how it is transported.
