HB 1733 closed that gap. Under Texas Insurance Code 1952.101, uninsured\/underinsured motorist coverage must be included unless a named insured rejected it in writing. Under Section 1952.152, personal injury protection coverage, PIP of at least $2,500 must be included unless rejected the same way. Whether that rejection exists, and who signed it, can decide whether there is a second source of money for your injuries.\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <p>Most coverage maps stop at the liability number. The recovery often lives one layer deeper. UM\/UIM coverage pays when the at fault driver has no insurance or not enough of it, which matters constantly in Texas where minimum policies are thin. They ride along with the policy automatically unless a named insured signed a written rejection. That word &#8220;written&#8221; is the lever. A verbal &#8220;I don&#8217;t need that&#8221; does not count; the carrier has to be able to produce the signed waiver.
