Working with a lawyer
The short answer
Yes, you can look for a different lawyer, and no rule says otherwise. Managing litigation attorney Matthew Graham advises in a 2026 video that you start by trying to repair the relationship. If that fails, our firm will talk with you and may be able to take over your case by working with your current lawyer.
“This is not uncommon, and it's not uncommon for people to look around either. There's nothing wrong with it. It's not against the rules.”
Calls from people who already have an attorney are common, and looking around is not against the rules.
The first advice is to repair the relationship with your current counsel, because the lawyer and client bond is personal and confidential.
The firm that started with you is probably best positioned to resolve the claim, since it has been with you from the beginning.
At an impasse, our firm can talk with you and, under certain circumstances, work with your current lawyer to transfer the representation.
Matthew treats the call from a represented person as ordinary and says nothing about it breaks a rule. Even so, he steers the person toward fixing things with the current lawyer first. The bond between attorney and client is private, and it is the means by which your claim eventually gets resolved.
His second point is practical. The firm that began the case with you has been there from the start and is likely best placed to finish it. If the relationship has truly stopped working, he says our firm is glad to talk, and under certain circumstances can arrange a transfer.
