Texas T Bone Crash Index

Texas recorded 68,556 T bone crashes in 2025, the most recent complete calendar year analyzed. These side impact collisions occurred about half as often as rear end crashes, but their serious crash rate was 1.8 times the rear end rate under the same TxDOT query rules.

A T bone crash happens when the front of one vehicle hits the side of another. TxDOT calls the closest matching group "Angle, both going straight," and that is the crash pattern counted in this index.

What This Study Counts

A T bone crash happens when one vehicle's front end hits the side of another vehicle. The name comes from the "T" shape the vehicles can form at impact.

TxDOT does not use the phrase "T bone" in its crash database. Instead, it classifies crashes by how the vehicles were moving before the impact. This index counts the group TxDOT calls "Angle, both going straight," the closest match for two vehicles traveling straight on crossing paths.

Keeping the definition narrow matters. A crash involving a left turn, a stopped vehicle or a vehicle backing up may also involve side damage, but it is a different kind of event. Combining all of those crashes would mix different traffic movements, roadway settings and risk patterns, and make the results less useful.

The study includes the TxDOT category that most closely matches a straight through side impact crash: two vehicles going straight on crossing paths. The crash types it leaves out are listed separately below, because each deserves its own analysis.

We count

  • Two vehicles traveling straight on crossing paths
  • Crashes TxDOT classifies as "Angle, both going straight"
  • Texas crashes reported to TxDOT from 2019 through September 24, 2026

We do not count

  • Head on crashes
  • Rear end crashes
  • Sideswipe crashes
  • Single vehicle crashes
  • Crashes involving a left turn across oncoming traffic

The full data tables include a comparison with all angle crashes for readers who want to see those other patterns. The main findings throughout this page, however, use the narrower T bone definition above.

How Often T Bone Crashes Happen

T bone crashes are not rare in Texas. In 2025, TxDOT recorded 68,556, or 12.7% of the 539,112 reported crashes statewide, about one in eight. [TB-001, TB-002, TB-003]

The yearly count has been remarkably stable. Except for the sharp decline in 2020, when traffic patterns changed during the pandemic, Texas recorded between about 70,900 and 72,600 T bone crashes each year from 2019 through 2024. That consistency shows this is not a short term spike or an unusual year. It is a recurring part of Texas's crash picture. [TB-004, TB-005, TB-006]

The count fell to 68,556 in 2025, 4.9% fewer than in 2024. Even with that decline, T bone crashes still accounted for 12.7% of all reported Texas crashes in 2025, almost the same share seen throughout the study period. [TB-007, TB-008, TB-003]

The serious outcome trend tells a different story. Crashes involving a death or suspected serious injury rose from 1,910 in 2019 to a high of 2,320 in 2021. The total declined each year after 2021, reaching 2,076 in 2025. Even so, the 2025 figure remained 8.7% above the 2019 level, while the overall T bone crash count was 5.5% lower. [TB-009, TB-010, TB-011, TB-012, TB-013]

The 2025 count may change as late and corrected reports are processed.

The chart below shows both the number of T bone crashes and their share of all reported Texas crashes. The share stays close to 13% in every year, even as overall traffic conditions changed.

Texas crashes classified as "Angle, both going straight." Figures are based on reported crashes in TxDOT's Crash Records Information System (CRIS).

2026 update: 2026 year to date through September 24; preliminary and incomplete. TxDOT's database showed 48,272 T bone crashes in 2026 as of September 24, 2026, 12.9% of the 374,749 crashes reported so far. That count will rise as agencies submit late reports and TxDOT processes corrections, so it should not be compared with full year totals. [TB-014, TB-015, TB-016]

Crash counts by year, 2026 year to date, and people killed or seriously injured

Frequency alone does not tell the full story. To understand why T bone crashes matter, it helps to compare their outcomes with the rear end collision, the most common type of crash in Texas records.

T Bone Crashes Are More Severe Than Rear End Crashes

Rear end crashes were nearly twice as common as T bone crashes in 2025. Texas recorded 136,250 rear end crashes, compared with 68,556 T bone crashes. [TB-017, TB-018]

But the outcome was different. A T bone crash was much more likely to involve a death or suspected serious injury. In this study, a serious crash means that TxDOT coded the crash as fatal or involving a suspected serious injury.

The table puts frequency and severity side by side. Rear end crashes produced more serious crashes in total because they happened almost twice as often. But T bone crashes were more likely to produce a serious outcome when measured crash for crash.

Rear end and T bone crashes, Texas, 2025
2025 Rear end crashes T bone crashes
Total crashes 136,250 68,556
Serious crashes 2,351 2,076
Serious crashes for every 1,000 crashes 17.3 30.3
Fatal crashes 297 255
Fatal crashes for every 1,000 crashes 2.18 3.72
People killed or seriously injured 2,813 2,572

Takeaway: rear end crashes were more common, but T bone crashes were more likely to involve a death or suspected serious injury.

For every 1,000 rear end crashes, 17.3 involved a death or suspected serious injury. For every 1,000 T bone crashes, that number was 30.3. [TB-019, TB-020, TB-021]

Put another way, if Texas had 1,000 crashes of each type, the T bone group would produce about 13 more crashes involving a death or suspected serious injury. The serious crash rate for T bone collisions was 1.8 times the rear end rate. [TB-022, TB-023]

This was not a result from a single year. The same pattern appeared every year from 2019 through 2025: rear end crashes occurred more often, but the T bone group consistently produced more serious outcomes relative to its size.

Crash counts also understate the human impact. In 2025, T bone crashes were linked to 277 deaths and 2,295 people reported with suspected serious injuries, 2,572 people killed or seriously injured in all. [TB-024, TB-025, TB-026]

These are person counts, not crash counts. A single collision can involve several people, which is why the number of people harmed can exceed the number of serious crashes.

T bone crashes were not the most severe crash pattern in the state. Their serious crash rate was below the average for all reported crashes statewide, 33.2 for every 1,000. Even so, they were substantially more severe than rear end crashes, which makes the comparison important for drivers, safety planners and anyone trying to understand Texas crash risk. [TB-027]

TxDOT assigns severity from information available in the crash report. A fatal crash involves a death within 30 days. A suspected serious injury reflects the investigating officer's assessment at the time of the report. It is not a final medical diagnosis or a legal finding.

What Vehicle Damage Shows

Crash records identify the area of each vehicle that received the most severe reported damage. In 2025, a damage rating was available for 96.3% of vehicles involved in the T bone group. [TB-028]

The recorded damage pattern is consistent with front to side contact. Front end damage was the most common pattern, appearing on 53.4% of rated vehicles. Side damage appeared on 38.5%. [TB-029, TB-030]

Rear end crashes showed a different pattern: 49.4% of rated vehicles had back end damage, while 4.1% had angular side damage. The contrast helps explain why rear end and T bone crashes are analyzed as separate collision types. [TB-031, TB-032]

These percentages describe vehicles with a recorded damage rating. They do not identify which driver caused the crash, which vehicle struck first, or which occupant was injured.

Most severe recorded damage area on vehicles, Texas, 2025
Most severe recorded damage area Vehicles in T bone crashes Vehicles in rear end crashes
Front end 53.4% 45.0%
Side damage 38.5% 4.1%
Back end 1.9% 49.4%
Side damage near the passenger compartment (part of side damage) 15.5% 0.5%

These figures count vehicles, not crashes. The damage entry and the crash classification come from the same report, so the table describes the patterns recorded by investigators. It does not independently test whether TxDOT classified every crash correctly.

Damage codes, direction of force and damage records by year

Texas is large, and traffic conditions vary sharply from one city to another. The next section compares the same T bone crash definition across 12 Texas cities.

T Bone Crashes in 12 Texas Cities

A raw crash count favors large cities because more people live, work and drive there. To make the city comparison more useful, this index also shows the number of T bone crashes for every 100,000 residents.

The same 12 cities and population method are used in the Texas Rear End Crash Index. That keeps the two studies comparable and keeps the city list from changing from one crash type to another. [TB-033]

Houston recorded 10,021 T bone crashes in 2025 and Odessa recorded 571, yet Odessa had the higher rate for its population. That is why the table shows both the count and the rate. [TB-034, TB-035]

Among the 12 cities studied, Odessa had the highest 2025 rate at 465.3 crashes per 100,000 residents. Houston was second at 418.0. Austin had the lowest rate at 152.5. Statewide, Texas recorded 216.2 T bone crashes for every 100,000 residents. [TB-036, TB-037, TB-038, TB-039]

The table is sorted by crashes per 100,000 residents, not by total crash count. A higher rate means more reported T bone crashes relative to the city's population. It does not mean that a resident has a known individual probability of being in a crash.

City boundaries affect the comparison. In 2025, 12,285 T bone crashes occurred outside city limits. They are included in the statewide figure but cannot be assigned to one of the 12 city rows. [TB-049]

A city may have a high rate because more traffic moves through it, not necessarily because its residents face a higher personal risk. Population rates make cities of different sizes easier to compare, but they are not a complete measure of road danger. These rates use each city's July 1, 2025 population and do not account for traffic volume, road mileage, commuter travel, intersection density, or differences in local reporting.

The city comparison shows where these crashes were reported. The next section looks more closely at the settings and conditions recorded in the crash reports themselves.

Where and When T Bone Crashes Happen

At Intersections

T bone crashes are concentrated where traffic paths cross. In 2025, 84.1% occurred at an intersection, compared with 24.5% of all reported Texas crashes. [TB-050, TB-051]

That difference does not show that every intersection is unsafe. It shows that the defined T bone pattern is closely tied to places where drivers must cross, enter, stop, yield or proceed through another traffic stream.

Stop signs and flashing red lights, which both require drivers to stop, were the most common traffic control recorded at these crash locations, followed by traffic signals. Traffic control type identifies what was present at the crash location. It does not identify who had the right of way or whether a driver followed the control. [TB-052, TB-053]

T bone crashes by traffic control, Texas, 2025
Traffic control T bone crashes Share Serious crashes for every 1,000 crashes
Stop sign or flashing red light 29,517 43.1% 32.4
Traffic signal 18,942 27.6% 34.7

No traffic control 2,963 4.3% 20.9
Other or not recorded 4,704 6.9% 27.2

Shares in this table: [TB-052, TB-053, TB-054, TB-055, TB-056]

Flashing red lights are counted with stop signs. Under Texas Transportation Code section 544.008, a driver facing a flashing red signal must stop, and the right to proceed follows the rules that apply after stopping at a stop sign.

What Crash Reports List

Crash reports can list more than one contributing factor. These entries reflect the investigating officer's assessment and do not determine legal fault.

Failure to yield was listed in 48.8% of the T bone crashes studied. Disregarded traffic signals and stop signs were also common. Those findings fit the intersection setting, where drivers often have to yield, stop or cross another traffic stream. [TB-057, TB-058, TB-059]

Serious crash rate: crashes involving a death or suspected serious injury for every 1,000 crashes in that factor group.

Speed related and alcohol related factors appeared in fewer reports, but the crashes listing either factor had much higher serious crash rates than the full T bone group, which had 30.3 serious crashes for every 1,000 crashes. [TB-063, TB-064, TB-020]

That does not mean speed or alcohol was the only cause of those crashes. One crash can include several listed factors, so the percentages in the table add to more than 100%.

Alcohol related factors are the two alcohol entries an officer can list in the crash report: "had been drinking" and "under the influence of alcohol." A listed entry does not mean a chemical test result was recorded.

When T Bone Crashes Happen

T bone crashes were most common in the late afternoon. The highest number occurred during the hour beginning at 5 p.m., followed closely by the 4 p.m. hour. [TB-065, TB-066]

The afternoon peak overlaps with a time when many people are traveling from work, school and other daily activities. The records show when crashes happened, but they do not measure traffic volume or prove why the afternoon count was higher.

About one in four T bone crashes occurred in darkness, at dawn or at dusk. Crashes after dark had 45.3 serious crashes for every 1,000, compared with 25.9 in daylight. That is a difference in the reported data, not proof that darkness alone caused the more serious outcomes. [TB-067, TB-068, TB-069]

The chart shows the number of reported T bone crashes during each hour of the day. The afternoon peak is clear, but serious crashes occurred at every hour.

Full Severity Results

The broader angle group includes the main T bone category plus the other angle crashes, those involving a turning, backing or stopped vehicle. It is useful for context, but it is not the same as the narrower T bone group used throughout the main page. It had 25.6 serious crashes for every 1,000 in 2025. [TB-071]

Crashes involving a left turn across oncoming traffic are also shown for comparison (38.1 serious crashes for every 1,000). They are not included in the T bone total and will be analyzed separately in a future Left Turn Crash Index. [TB-072]

Vehicle Damage Details

The detailed damage table uses TxDOT's technical damage codes. The summary above groups those codes into front, side and back damage so the pattern is easier to understand.

Officers rate each vehicle's damage with TxDOT's CR-80 Vehicle Damage Guide; rating 1 holds the most severe damage. The guide defines LP as "left side damage in vicinity of passenger compartment due to angular impact by another vehicle or object," RP as the right side equivalent, and directs investigators to those codes when a vehicle is struck broadside near the passenger compartment. In 2025, 15.5% of rated vehicles in T bone crashes had LP or RP as their most severe damage. [TB-075, TB-076]

Sideswipe damage (LD, RD) is kept out of the side measures because CR-80 defines it as parallel impact. The public query can count damage by vehicle but cannot count crashes in which at least one vehicle had side damage; that crash level measure needs TxDOT's bulk extract and is planned for Edition 2.

Serious T Bone Crashes by City

City serious crash rates varied more than overall T bone crash rates. Midland had the highest serious crash rate among the 12 cities, 43.5 for every 1,000 crashes, while Laredo had the lowest, 7.8. [TB-080, TB-081]

Several cities (Corpus Christi, Laredo, Lubbock, Odessa, McAllen) had fewer than 20 serious T bone crashes. Small counts can produce large swings from one year to the next, so those rates should be read with caution.

A city can have a high T bone crash rate but a lower serious crash rate, or the reverse. This table separates how often crashes occurred from how severe they were.

In 2025, 42.4% of T bone crashes occurred on roadways coded in CRIS as part of the state highway system. The other 57.6% occurred off that system. The serious crash rate was higher on the state system roads in this analysis, for every crash group in the table below. [TB-082, TB-083]

The roadway system comparison is descriptive. It does not measure traffic volume, speed, road design, or the reason a crash occurred.

How We Counted Them

Our T Bone Definition

The main dataset includes reported Texas crashes that TxDOT classified as "Angle, both going straight." TxDOT uses this category, in its manner of collision field, to describe how the vehicles were moving before the crash.

The technical table below lists every TxDOT collision category used in this index. It shows which category defines the main T bone group and which categories appear only as comparisons. Each code matches the live CRIS code table and TxDOT's Public Extract File Specification (updated June 13, 2025), and none changed between 2019 and 2025. Labels are quoted exactly as TxDOT publishes them. [TB-087]

What a Reported Crash Means

TxDOT's database does not include every minor collision that happens in Texas. It includes crashes that meet the state reporting threshold, generally because they involved an injury, a death, or about $1,000 or more in damage to any one person's property. TxDOT flags these crashes as reportable, and every count here uses that flag.

Small crashes that were not reported to law enforcement may not appear in the database.

Why 2025 Is the Main Year

2025 is the most recent complete calendar year in this analysis. TxDOT may still receive late or corrected reports.

TxDOT's April 7, 2026 statewide snapshot reported 3,769 traffic deaths for 2025. The September 24 CRIS query used for this study returned 3,763 people killed. Because these figures come from different data snapshots and query processes, this study does not treat the difference of 6 deaths as a change in TxDOT's official annual total. [TB-088]

2026 is shown separately as year to date figures through September 24, 2026, which are preliminary and incomplete. They cover the 2026 crashes in TxDOT's database on that date, and the most recent weeks are incomplete. All counts come from the CRIS public query run September 24, 2026, 6:23 p.m. to 9:23 p.m. Central.

How Cities Are Counted

A crash counts toward a city only if it happened inside the city limits, because TxDOT's instructions tell officers to enter a city name only in that case. City rates divide each year's crashes by the city's July 1 population for the same year, from Census Bureau Vintage 2025 estimates. [TB-089]

A crash outside city limits may still occur near a metro area, but it is not included in that city's row.

Crashes, Vehicles and People

This study uses three different types of counts:

  • Crash count: one collision.
  • Vehicle count: one vehicle involved in a collision.
  • People count: one person killed or reported with a suspected serious injury.

Because one crash may involve several vehicles and several people, these totals answer different questions and should not be compared as if they measure the same thing.

Data Quality Notes

TxDOT revised its crash report form for crashes on or after April 1, 2023 (TxDOT forms page). The data quality table below shows that the fields used in this study remained consistently available before and after that change.

No field changed by 5 points or more across the April 2023 revision; in plain terms, the form change did not create a large break in the data used for this study. TxDOT's revised crash report form took effect on April 1, 2023. The data quality table splits that year before and after the change, while the annual trend tables use standard calendar year totals. The city row is not a missing value measure: the City field is always filled, and crashes outside city limits carry the value OUTSIDE CITY LIMITS. Direction of force is optional for agencies.

The public query provided the statewide, city, vehicle and person totals used in this edition; no individual crash records were downloaded. Compared with the September 23, 2026 query behind the Texas Rear End Crash Index, every T bone count was identical in all 13 geographies and 7 years. More detailed analysis connecting vehicle damage to a particular occupant or another vehicle would require TxDOT's bulk data extract and is outside this edition.

As a check on the query, statewide people killed and seriously injured are compared with TxDOT's published Crash Facts editions for 2019 to 2024. For 2025, TxDOT has not yet posted a Crash Facts edition, so the death count comes from its 2003 to 2025 comparison table. Small differences are expected because CRIS keeps receiving reports while each published figure is a fixed snapshot. [TB-090, TB-091, TB-092, TB-093, TB-094, TB-095]

  • Share of reported crashes = crashes in the group / all reportable crashes x 100.
  • Serious crashes for every 1,000 crashes = crashes coded fatal (K) or suspected serious injury (A) / crashes in the group x 1,000. Fatal crashes for every 1,000 crashes = fatal crashes / crashes in the group x 1,000.
  • Crashes per 100,000 residents = crashes in the year / July 1 population of the same year x 100,000 (Census Bureau Vintage 2025).
  • Comparison of two rates = T bone rate / rear end rate, both from the same query. Percent change = (later year – earlier year) / earlier year x 100.
  • This index describes how the vehicles collided and how severe the crashes were. It does not measure fault, causation, legal liability, roadway responsibility, or treatment outcomes.

What the Data Shows

T bone crashes made up about one in eight reported Texas crashes in 2025. They happened less often than rear end collisions but were more likely to involve a death or suspected serious injury.

Most occurred at intersections, where crash reports often listed failure to yield or a disregarded traffic signal or stop sign. The data also shows higher serious crash rates after dark and in crashes listing speed related or alcohol related factors.

These findings describe patterns in Texas crash reports. They do not decide fault, explain every cause, or determine responsibility in any individual crash.

About This Research

This index provides a public, reproducible statewide and selected city analysis of Texas crashes classified in TxDOT CRIS under its "Angle, both going straight" category, the closest available agency classification for a T bone collision. The analysis brings together a statewide annual series, selected city rates, severity comparisons with rear end crashes, vehicle damage patterns, traffic control context, factors listed in crash reports and downloadable methods from one consistent TxDOT CRIS framework.

The Texas T Bone Crash Index was prepared by J. Alexander Law Firm as public interest traffic safety research. It relies on aggregate public records and does not identify anyone involved in a crash. It is not legal advice. Josh Alexander, founder and managing attorney of J. Alexander Law Firm, reviewed the index.

Related research built on the same rules includes the Texas Rear End Crash Index and the Texas Head On Collision Index; see also the Texas Red Light Camera Study. For help after a crash, the firm's T bone accident lawyers page covers these cases across Texas, with a dedicated page for San Antonio T bone accidents.

For an example of a side impact case, attorney Laura Rivas secured an $850,000 settlement after a Pasadena red light crash, in which another driver ran a red light and struck the client's pickup truck at an intersection. Every case is different. Past results do not guarantee a similar outcome.

This is Edition 1, published . Planned for Edition 2, with TxDOT's bulk extract: a crash level side damage measure, vehicle pairs, and occupant position relative to the damaged side. Questions or corrections are welcome through the firm's contact page.
